They been there:

The picturesque mountain town of Sorata (2,700 m above sea level) lies directly below the slopes of the mighty Cordillera Real. It is only less than 150 kilometers from La Paz and the crossing of the Cumbre saddle (4,240 m above sea level) and amazing views not only of the mountains but also of the surrounding canyons await you. So the journey itself is the goal. Sorata is otherwise also a well-known trek trail. The most famous hike leads to the Glaciar lagoon (5,050 m above sea level)

Road along the plateau

Minibuses depart for Sorata from La Paz from the „U hřbitova“ locality. It always takes the longest time to „break through“ the streets of La Paz to the suburb of El Alto (4,050 m above sea level) located on the Altiplano plateau. The road leads along the plateau and there are scattered farmsteads around. Views are both of the mountains and later of Lake Titicaca

Huarina

The minibus has a short stop in Huarina, an important road junction. Most tourists from there head to Lake Titcaca, the rest towards Sorata

Road at Cumbre Pass

The road gradually climbs up to the Cumbre saddle (4,240 m above sea level) from where an amazing view opens up to the interior of the canyon and to the highest mountains of the Cordillera Real

Retrospect

There are huge valleys on both sides of the ridge that the road leads to. The arid mountains above the villages are about 4,200 meters above sea level

Turn at Jesus

In fact, the road still leads just below the ridge separating the two mighty valleys. In the steepest bend on the promontory above the valley is a statue of Jesus. You are only 10km before Sorata. Here you can get thrown away, admire the views and walk to Sorata, or take a light taxi here.

View of the steepest bend

From Jesus there is a nice view of the steepest bend on this road. When building the road, he got a comb, which is why

Descent through the agricultural landscape

From Jesus, a long descent through the agricultural landscape to the bottom of the valley awaits us. Thanks to the open landscape, the views are practically constant

View of Ancohuma

Above everything rises on the horizon the white peak of Ancohuma – the third highest mountain in Bolivia

Agricultural region around Sorata

Compared to the nearby Altiplan, it is far more fertile and life is probably more bearable

Where else to wash a car than by the river at the bottom of the canyon

Sorata

We are finally in Sorata. The city has a really relaxed impression – a small square with palm trees and a white church. Cheap accommodation and bananas – cool
