Cruise to the sacred island
A cruise to the island of the Sun is a comfortable start to the whole trip to this sacred island. The most classic is the start from the port of Copacabana with an exit in either the southern port of Yumani or the northern Challapampa. Alternatively, you can set sail from Yampupata, which is closest to the island of the Sun. The cruise from Copacabani to Challapampa takes two hours and you can enjoy nice views of the lake shores and mountains on the horizon at all times.
Departure from Copacabana
Right at the beginning of the cruise are nice views of the rock above Copacabana – Horca del Inca. A little further on is a lookout hill with an antenna (4,190 m above sea level), where only a minimum of tourists climb
Cerro Calvaria from the lake
A moment later, the most famous hill near Copacabana – Cerro Calvaria – surrounds itself.
Sailing along the coast
The ship in this part goes almost a kilometer away from the coast. From here there are nice views of the desolate mountains rising just a short distance from the lake. The peaks reach 4,500 meters above sea level.
Canal between cliffs
Probably the most interesting part of the cruise is the passage of a narrow gap between the cliffs
View of the bay
From the canal in the cliffs there is a nice view of the adjacent bay
At the island of the Sun.
Finally you get closer to the island of the sun. Here, too, the mountain slopes are covered with fields built over the centuries.
The port of Challapampa
After two hours of sailing, we are finally in the northern port – in Challapampa.
Church in Cha´llapampa
The fishing and farming village of Challapampa has only a few houses and small churches. It is possible to stay here or eat here.
Altiplan donkeys
Fields begin right behind the settlement, every bit of fertile land must be used. You will also see a lot of bushy donkeys here.
