The city at a tourist crossroads
Birkat Al-Mawz is a small town with several attractions such as a castle, an old clay town or a huge oasis. In addition, it is a starting point for a number of tourist attractions such as the Saiq plateau or Wadi al-Muaydin canyon
Castle in Birkat Al-Mawz
The first attraction of the city that we will visit is a large castle called Bait al Redidah. There is also a large free car park
Watchtower
Not far from the castle is a watchtower on a small rocky hill. We climb to it, because we expect a nice view of the surroundings.
View of the castle from the watchtower
There is a really nice view from the tower, but it's an otherwise strange place, because there are several carcasses of goats
View of the old town
From the tower you can see our next destination – the old town of clay houses located at the foot of the mountains directly above the oasis
An oasis in Birkat Al-Mawz
The local oasis is really large and survives thanks to an ingenious irrigation system that draws water from the surrounding mountains.
Early evening in Birkat Al-Mawz
The more modern part of the city is south and west of the oasis and there is probably no reason to explore it any more
Sunset near the castle
At sunset we are just back at the castle, so we can enjoy what it looks like lit up in gold
Inside the oasis
Several narrow roads lead through the oasis. There are small fields under the palm trees. Pleasant walk
Watchtower over the oasis
It will take us quite a while to find our way from the oasis to another lookout ridge and another watchtower.
In an abandoned city
At dusk we still walk through the abandoned old town. Interesting atmosphere to browse vacant houses with lots of uneven things.
