Historic village under the Jebel Sham
Misfat Al Abriyeen is a traditional village situated above a canyon and an oasis. You will find several original houses and you can take a pleasant walk along the irrigation canal. Finally, ascend to the ruins of the watchtower above the village and enjoy the view
View of Misfat al Abriyeen
Directly from Al Hamra, you can climb the winding road to Misfat. After you go to the rocky ridge, where there is now a „new“ town, turn into it and drive to the end of the road from where you have a great view of the old part on the other side of the valley.
View of the new city
After the view, return to the crossroads and go down to the parking lot above the old town. Leave the car here. It is useless to continue to weave through the narrow streets. From the parking lot there is a view back to the new city where you were a while ago
Misfat al Abriyeen
From the parking lot, the road slowly descends into the village. There are warnings everywhere that conservative people live here and that you should have long pants
Local development
You will really find several original houses here, but it is not such a stone as to be expected from the tourist attractions of this place
Walk along the irrigation canal
The best thing you can do in Misfat is to walk along the irrigation canal. The path leads through an oasis overlooking the terraced fields. You can walk directly along the canal and occasionally overcome minor pitfalls or along the path next door
Defended tower
It probably wouldn't even be Oman if there weren't defense towers and turrets along the way
Golden walls of the canyon
In the early evening, the opposite side of the canyon looks like a golden wall
At the bottom of the canyon
The path slowly approaches the bottom of the canyon with a view of the next turret
The bottom of the canyon
We turn back at the huge boulders. For those who would like to take it more trekking, the W9 marked trail continues to the other side of the mountains to the village of Bilad Sayt
Way back
We do not go back along the marked path, but directly along the irrigation canal and it is much more fun with a few pitfalls. But everything can be walked through or the incriminated place can be bypassed.
Ascent to the ruins
The highlight of our visit to Misfat was the ascent to the ruins above the village
At the ruins
No official footpath leads to the ruins, only an imperceptible path between the boulders. If you are here in the early evening, it has a really great atmosphere.
Great views
At the ruins, it pays to sit and enjoy the beautiful view of the region. The place is about 1000 meters above sea level.
Mix right below us
Even from here, the village looks very interesting – better than up close
Exit to Al Hamra
On the way back, there are nice views of Al Hamra below the mountains from the bends of the road
