Trek over three passes (Renjo la, Cho la and Kongma la) leads you through more challenging, but very beautiful and far less crowded parts of Khumbu region. Also here is your destination Everest BC and the most beautiful mountain outlook point in the world Kala Patthar. As a bonus, you can also climb two more five thousand outlook Gokyo Ri and Chukhung Ri.If you are lucky, you will see several eight-thousand high mountains – not only Mount Everest and Lhotse, Cho Oyu and throne of the gods Makalu, but also one of the most beautiful mountains in the world Ama Dablam and a whole range of other high mountains.
1 to 4 day
Beginning of the trek
The first four days are basically the same for all treks in the area and you will walk along the shortest route of the trek to Everest View, i.e. by air from Kathmandu to Lukla, then walk to Namche Bazar, acclimatization in sherpa villages and the way to Thame. Just such a warm up for the passes to come.
Everest View Trek
Walk to the outlook place at Everest
Everest View Trek (or Namche Bazar trek) is a basic introduction to Khumbu area. It is suitable especially for those who are worried about high altitudes or just do not have energy for the entire trek to base camp below Everest or trek across three passes. During this walk you will also see the highest mountain in the world – Mount Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. continue reading
5 to 7 day
Over Renjo la pass to Gokyo
At this stage of the trek waits for you the crossing of the first five thousand high pass Renjo la (5 412 m asl) /in maps is shown 50m less /. This way can be managed for two days from Thame over the pass to Goya, but it is definitely worthwhile to have an extra acclimatization day, or two with walks for example to the glacier Lunang. The crossing of the pass is long and grueling, especially the descent to Gokyo. Along the way there are two high-lying lakes and with a little luck you will have a nice view of Everest from the pass.
Hike Thame - Lungdhen
Acclimatization stage
Less than ten kilometer long route through the valley of Bhote Khosi from Thame (3 800 m asl) to Lungdhen (4 380 m asl) seems to be very short distance for the whole day. But if you are not yet sufficiently acclimated, it is more reasonable to accommodate in the previous village – in Marulung (4 150 m asl), avoid altitude sickness and have one additional day to prepare for the crossing of five thousand high pass Renjo la to Gokyo. The trail still leads along the old trade route with salt to Tibet over the infamous pass Nangpa la. continue reading
8 to 9 day
Gokyo Ri and other trips from Gokyo
It is worth to spend at least two days in Gokyo, maybe even more. The basic ascent is to the adjacent famous Gokyo Ri (5 366 m asl). People usually walk here during the sunrise, but if the weather is favorable, of course, far better is the sunset with red-colored Everest. Another, but less frequently walked trip is along Ngozumba glacier and the lakes lying around (Tonak Tsho, Ngozumba Tsho and Gyazumba Tsho) to very interesting outlook points Nameless Fangs and Knobby view.
Gokyo and surroundings
Mountain base in the valley of Dudh Kosh
The settlement of Gokyo (4 773 m asl) located below the side moraine of the largest glacier in Kumbu Ngozumba is the tourist attraction mainly due to the adjacent hill Gokyo Ri (5 366 m asl), from which is stunning view of Everest, Lhotse and other peaks. However, it can offer a far more interesting walks leading along the glacier in the direction to the majestic Cho Oyu. continue reading
10 to 11 day
Over Cho la pass to Dzonglha
Now awaits you the most difficult and dangerous part on the entire trek – crossing of the glacier Ngozumba and mainly the pass Cho la. You will end this demanding walk in Dzonglha (4 836 m asl).
Hike Gokyo - Dragnang
Crossing the glacier Ngozumba
If you want to cross Cho la pass, you have no other choice but to walk over the glacier Ngozumba to Dragnang (4 679 m asl). Certainly do not stick to the printed map, because the way constantly changes thanks to the movement of the glacier. Ask for sure already at the lodge in Gokyo, where the starting point to the glacier currently is. The path is sometimes marked by stone cairns. And consider also the fact that you can lose your way easily in bad weather. continue reading
12 to 13 day
Kala Patthar and Everest BC
Now awaits you walk from Dzhonghla along the beautiful outlook path to Lobuche (4 938 m asl), where you will join the basic route of the trek to BC Everest. From there you will continue in significantly denser tourist traffic up to Gorak Shep (5 180 m asl). Along the way, you'll admire a beautiful Pumori (7 165 m asl). If you still have energy and weather permits, set out in the afternoon for the sunset on Kala Patthar, which is the best on the entire trek. The next day, head to BC Everest and get back to Lobuche the same afternoon, where is the starting point to the third five thousand high pass on this trek – Kongma la.
Hike Dzonglha - Lobuche
Beautiful view of Chola Tsho
After a very demanding crossing of Cho La pass with a tiny glacier follows this easy stage with very nice views of the beautiful pyramid Cholatse (6 440m asl) and Chola Tsho lake directly under it. continue reading
Túra Lobuche - Gorak Shep
A short path to the fabulous couloir
The path from Lobuche to Gorak Shep is short – only about five kilometers. On the other hand, it leads at a height of more than five kilometers above sea level, so with a backpack it is quite demanding and seems subjectively quite long. In addition, there is a large moraine of the glacier Changri on the way, so unfortunately it doesn´t lead just upwards. Great satisfaction for the tourist´s effort is not only still a better view of Nuptse, but mainly the final couloir of mountains with dominant Pumori. continue reading
Ascent to Kala Patthar
Gorgeous outlook to Everest
Black Rock alias Kala Patthar is one of the most beautiful mountain outlook in the world. Especially during perfect weather in the sunset enthusiastic trekker can see how the whole Nepal gradually fades away in the dark and just the tip of Mount Everest shine with red color. Very surprising is that the vast majority of tourists ascent here at sunrise, when it's definitely not so photogenic. continue reading
Hike Gorak Shep - Everest Base Camp
Along the Khumbu glacier to Base Camp
Just the name itself – the base camp under Everest has the atmosphere of expeditionary climbing romance. In fact, such a particular place does not even exist, because each expedition group establishes it differently. Perhaps that is why a few kilometers behind Gorak Step there is „tourist base camp“, where you can nicely relax among the fluttering flags. continue reading
14 to 15 day
Over Kongma la pass to Chhukhung
Now awaits you the third and final five thousand high pass Kongma la. The view from its top is also one of the best what you will see on this trek. Before you descend back to starting point of the trek, make a trip in the surroundings of Chhukhungu. You can choose from:
- Walk to lake Imja Tsho
- Ascent to the outlook hill Chhkhung Ri (5 550 m asl)
- If you have climbing ambitions and you have pre-arranged it, you can take use of the acquired acclimatization during the ascent to Island Peak (6 189 m asl)
- Another difficult possibility is to overcome the icy Amphulapcha pass and descent into the uninhabited and deserted valley of Hunku. There is a link to the Makalu trek and Mera peak trek
Hike across Kongma la pass
Across The most beautiful pass in Khumbu
Surprisingly not frequently walked shortcut from Lobuche to Chhukhung over Kongma la pass (5 528m asl.) with stunning views of the throne of the gods Makalu. continue reading
16 to 18 day
Back to Lukla
The journey from Chhukhung to Lukla can be done even in two days with overnight stay in Namche Bazar. But most tourists walk it longer in 3–4 days.
- Chhukhung – Dingboche – Pangboche – Tengboche (4 hours): descent from Chhukhung first freely descends to Dingboche, a village standing on a vast plain. There are quite a lot of tourists coming here to acclimatize. Just below Dingboche you reconnect again to the main trekking route, therefore also to the crowds. The following descent leads through a pretty boring narrow valley. Then follows the ascent to the ridge with the monastery Tenboche. It is quite often foggy here and rhododendron forest around. When there is by chance no fog, there is a nice view from here on Everest.
- Tengboche – Namche Bazar (3,5 hours): As first comes long descent winding through coniferous forest, 600 meters of altitude into the valley. A lot of tourists will ascend in the opposite direction – they walk only the basic route and this ascent is probably the biggest trek´s challenge for them. The bridge over wild river Dudh Khosi is at a height of 3,250 m asl. The continuation is then quite tedious. Before you is unexpectedly long ascent through the woods and around villages and then endless traverse through the valley. The way culminates at 3 650 meters, so „pleasant“ 400 vertical meters from the river. On the other hand, the views of the canyon towards Namche are very nice.
- Namche Bazar – Lukla: along the same path. There is no other possible alternative.
