Swimming at the Beach Provatas
The beach below the colorful volcanic re
Provatas beach is best known mainly for its colorful volcanic cliff. The main busiest beach is located close to this cliff at the eastern end of the bay. But there are totally five beaches separated by smaller cliffs and rocks. Some of them are with sun loungers and refreshments, some almost Robinson-like. Thanks to its location in the south of the island, there are often waves, but there are also days when is the sea calm. As a bonus, you can also do a walk to the church on the reef. If you do not want to walk in the local hot weather, it can be accessed directly from the road leading to the southwest of the island.
Provatas
„The main beach“ is about 150 meters long. Close to the cliff is also a small tavern with the possibility of renting chairs. But the larger part of the beach is free. If you manage to overcome colorful cliff, you will get to even more famous beach Firopotamus.

Looking west you will see the end of the beach with cliffs and a pair of fishing houses called “wires” that are now converted into summer residences for tourists.
Volcanic cliffs
The local reefs are from not very hard volcanic rocks and so they are strongly modeled by water and wind erosion. So be careful especially when walking on their edge.
Inland
If you would like to walk to other parts of the bay or to the church, there would be no other choice than to use the „goat“ trails through the interior and along the cliffs. Walk in the heat will be made pleasant by the smell of local vegetation. You might also regret local sheep crowding here almost without any shadow. Anyway, do not forget to bring water and have something on your head.

After you ascend to the first reef, you will be rewarded with a nice view of Provatas.
Beach ala Robinson
Just behind the reef is a picturesque Robinson-like beach as done for people preferring privacy rather than comfort.
Ascent to the church
If you want to come to the church of Panagia Kipou, you will have to ascend to the cliff, this time along better path leading to the tavern. During the ascent you will have a nice view of the whole Robinson-like beach.
The western part of the bay
There are also more swimming possibilities in this bay further in the west direction.
