For most travelers, the pronunciation of Zanzibar evokes only endless snow-white beaches, but in addition, you will also find the interesting capital Stone Town with its old colonial monuments and beautiful streets. Not only the smell of spices and African well-being create an unmistakable atmosphere that is worth experiencing.

A tour of Stone Town

The whole old town looks like a triangle measuring about 1km x 0.5km, so you can't go through all the sights. It is interesting both the path along the coast and the intertwining alleys in the center of the old town. The local markets are worth seeing and be sure to go for a beautiful sunset and eat seafood after it. One day is enough for a thorough acquaintance

The Old Dispensary

Right next to the ferry port stands a huge historic colonial building – an old dispensary. From there we will continue along the coastal promenade.

Cannons in the harbor

One of the biggest attractions of the coastal promenade in Stone Town is a number of works. Just shoot – you probably wouldn't miss it :-)

Coast in Stone Town

Mostly only locals bathe directly in Stone Town. It is more interesting here in the evening, when it pulsates with life. There is a mix of fishing and cruise ships. Behind the ferry port to Dar es Salaam is a pile of sea containers

Beit-al-Ajaib - House of Wonders

The most famous monument of Stone Town, or the whole of Zanzibar, is the Beit-al-Ajaib Palace – House of Wonders, which is the former seat of the Sultan of Oman. In the evening, it lives nicely in its surroundings – just the center as it should be

Old Fort

An old 17th-century fortress stands next to the House of Wonders. It served as a defense of the city against Europeans, Portuguese

Wandering the streets of the old town

You can roam the streets of the city for a long time. Everywhere there are high porches as made for local locals. The ubiquitous beautifully carved wooden doors are also typical.

Dala Dala Terminal

Where to go from Stone Town? head to the east end of the center, where the Dala Dala terminal is. Zanzibar is not run by classic buses as public transport, but by small trucks with two longitudinal benches. Sometimes they look like a real truck due to the load on the roof. Each Dala Dala has its own number and line.
