They been there:

Ascent to Kilimanjaro II: the second stage of ascent to Kilimanjaro traverses the heather-covered slopes of the second highest peak of the massif – Mawenzi (5,149 m above sea level). Unlike the mighty Kiba, it looks like a rocky castle. You will find over 10 km of walking and another kilometer of altitude.

View of Mawenzi

It is only a short walk from the Mandara mountain huts to the heather vegetation zone. For almost the entire stage today, you will have a view of the sloping peak of Mawenzi – the third highest mountain in Africa, which you will bypass from the south.

The first view of Uhuru

Finally, the main goal of this trek – the highest peak in Africa, Uhuru, will start to peek at you through the heather. The little remnant of the glacier always betrays him.

Inversion over a mountain forest

How you enjoy this stage depends a lot on how high the inversion clouds will be that day. It most often stays above the mountain forest, but the heather zone is also affected by dense clouds and fog.

Road to Horombo huts

After two hours of walking, the bare slopes of the grassy zone are visible. Carriers traditionally carry everything on their heads in Africa, unlike, for example, Asian porters

Crater view

The diversification, otherwise slightly monotonous stages, is the view of the crater of a small volcano.

Valley view

Along the way you will cross a number of, mostly indistinct, valleys. One is more significant almost at the end of this stage.

Lobelia in Kilimanjaro

At altitudes from 3,600 meters above sea level, beautiful lobelias are beginning to appear – typical alpine plants of equatorial Africa.

In Horombo Huts

After less than five hours of walking, you will finally reach the cottage settlement of Horombo huts (3,720 m above sea level). The area is relatively deserted with only low vegetation.

Lobelia at Horombo Huts

In the valley, right next to Horombo huts, you will find the entire Lobelie grove. Definitely worth a short walk.
