A popular tour guide on the island is the Monastery of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, known as the Monastery of Evangelistria. The monastery complex is located in the countryside about 3 km north of the town of Skiathos on a slope in the middle of deep green pine forests.

Site of the Greek Resistance

An interesting fact is that in this monastery in 1807 a group of Greek freedom fighters folded the crest of freedom on the newly designed Greek flag, a white cross on an azure blue background, which was woven on a loom on the spot.

A monastic community

The monastery was originally founded by monks under the leadership of monk Niphon, after they were expelled from the monastic community on Athos in 1794 because they slightly deviated from the Holy Scriptures. Today, the monastic community numbers only four local monks.
