A small town in Provence
Saint-Paul-de Vence is one of the oldest medieval towns located near the city of Nice.
Walls
The center is fortified by almost intact walls.
View of the surroundings
The town lies in the mountains and from here there is a beautiful view of the surrounding area.
Alleys
It hides narrow winding streets with stone houses, fountains and a church. The streets are so steep and narrow that cars cannot enter the city.
The seat of painters
The town is famous as a place where famous artists worked. It was a favorite resting place of Pablo Picasso. Henri Matisse lived here for over 5 years. Marc Chagall settled in this town in 1950 and lived there until the end of his life. He is also buried here in the local cemetery.
Alleys full of galleries and studios
There are many small art galleries or studios. There is also one of the most important galleries of modern art, La Fondation Maegh. In this gallery you will find works by important painters, including J. Mira, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse.
Chapel of the Blancs Penitents
In the chapel des pénitents Blancs from the 17th century there is a beautiful huge mosaic with frescoes by the Belgian artist J. – M. Folon.
