This picturesque mountain village, located about 22 km south of Sušice, is located at the confluence of three streams (Modravské, Filipohuťské and Roklanské), which form the Vydra River.
The village is a perfect starting point for discovering the wildest nature of the Šumava. In summer, perfectly marked trails lead from here to iconic places in the Šumava. As soon as the snow falls, the village turns into a mecca for cross-country skiers. The trails are regularly groomed and connect Modrava with the entire Šumava Highway.

History

Modrava has a rich history associated with Czech and German settlement and after 1990 it became an independent municipality again.

Bienert's sawmill

The sawmill on the banks of the Roklanský stream was rebuilt in 1827 into a factory for the production of soundboards. In 1832, Franz Bienert received an imperial privilege for the exclusive production of soundboard wood. The production was transferred to Stožec in 1880. Today, the building serves as a romantic guesthouse.

Klostermann's Cottage

The dominant feature of the village, which you cannot miss, is the Klostermann Cottage. This architectural gem, designed by the famous architect Bohuslav Fuchs, was built in 1924 for the Czechoslovak Tourist Club.

Šumava writer

It is named after the writer Karel Klostermann, the „poet of Šumava“, who perfectly described the harsh life of the local inhabitants in his novels. The cottage has undergone extensive renovation and now operates as a hotel with a restaurant. The view from the terrace over the Modrava Valley is priceless.

Wood products and workshops for children

It is a great place (not only) for families with children, especially if the weather is not on your side. You will learn all about woodworking, Šumava fauna and flora, and children can try various creative workshops. Moreover, the building itself is an example of modern wooden architecture that fits perfectly into the landscape.

Pension and restaurant Lyer

A stylish guesthouse with a restaurant, where local beer is also brewed, has been built on the old foundations of houses and farm buildings. It is the oldest building in the village, completely renovated in 2021. Be sure to try their brewery goulash or venison specialties.

Modrava Brewery

The guesthouse is connected to a modern Šumava brewery, which brews excellent unfiltered and unpasteurized beers (light and dark lagers, as well as various top-fermented specials). The beer is brewed and tapped under the Lyer brand.
