The picturesque spa town of Luhačovice, in its center on the spa colonnade, boasts one of the most important works of architect Dušan Jurkovič – Jurkovič House. This unique building, built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, enchants visitors with its distinctive beauty inspired by folk art nouveau and still serves as an elegant hotel with a rich range of services.

History

The building was originally called „Jan's House“ and was built in a classicist style in 1822. It was rebuilt by Dušan Jurkovič in 1902. The house was raised by a half-timbered floor and a new roof, and its layout was arranged around two courtyards and a two-story entrance hall.

An architect with the soul of folk traditions

Dušan Jurkovič, a Slovak architect with an unmistakable style, gave the Jurkovič House a unique character. He was inspired by the folk architecture of the Slovak region, which is reflected in the colorful facade, wooden elements, decorative details and sensitive integration into the surrounding nature.

Jurkovič's distinctive style

The building is dominated by the third, half-timbered floor added by Jurkovič, carrying a rich roof configuration. The original plaster with its delicate Art Nouveau plasticity remarkably completes the half-timbering into the form of an upwardly branching Art Nouveau ornament.

Main spa building

Originally built as a spa hostel, the house quickly gained popularity for its cozy atmosphere and original design. Over the years, it has undergone sensitive renovations that respected its historical value while ensuring modern comfort for guests. The function of the building has not changed – it has always been a combination of a bathhouse and accommodation for spa guests.

Overhaul

The general renovation took place in 2000–2002 and the building was transformed into a four-star hotel. The original function of the spa house was preserved and supplemented with a restaurant and a swimming pool. The exterior and interior of the building were restored to their original state as closely as possible based on restoration surveys and period photographs.
