A walk to the second largest tree in the world
It's an easy walk of less than one kilometer that offers breathtaking views of the giant sequoias and is topped off with a view of the world's second largest escarpment, the General Grant, halfway through.
Route map
The route starts right at the parking lot and, as in all US National Parks, everything is very well marked and explained.
Giant sequoias
Visitors are amazed by the huge trees along the route. The most powerful tree in the world, giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), can reach a height of more than 80 meters. they have a trunk diameter of more than 10 meters. And the weight is over 2000 tons. The trees reach an incredible age of 2000–3000 years.
The most powerful and very old, but ...
Giant sequoias are the most massive trees in the world and reach a respectable height and age. However, they are neither the oldest nor the tallest tree species on Earth.
The tallest trees in the world are the more slender evergreen sequoias (Sequoia sempervirens), which can reach a height of up to 115 meters. The oldest trees in the world are pines (Pinus aristata), which have been found to be up to 4700 years old.
What is the circumference of the tree?
In order to protect the sensitive roots of the trees, it is not allowed to walk outside the marked paths. Nevertheless, many visitors are looking for a way to get to the tribes. The gigantic girth of the trees then stands out when a human chain forms and encircles the tree.
Very hardy trees
Old redwoods usually look like their top has died. This is because their tops have been struck by lightning or the tree can't pull nutrients up that high. The bark of stromul trees is very strong and is resistant to fire, so fires will not harm redwoods. The trees are often hollow, so they could often serve as shelter for the Indians.
Fallen Monarch
The trunk of this fallen giant called the „Fallen Monarch“ is hollowed out, and the interior of the tree has served a number of purposes – at one time as a log cabin, at one time as a tourist inn, and even as a stable for cavalry.
Passing through a tree cavity
You can freely walk inside the tree and enjoy this unusual attraction. Although the tree fell more than a hundred years ago, it is very well preserved and has hardly succumbed to decay.
General Grant Tree
The more than 81 meter tall redwood is considered the second largest tree in the world. Named after former general and 18th US President Ulysses S. Grant, it has been America's official Christmas tree since 1926. This redwood is simply a legend.
Incredible dimensions
The tree is 81.5 meters tall, the circumference of the trunk is 32.8 meters at the ground, and the total volume of the trunk is 1320 m3. Due to its gigantic dimensions, it cannot be photographed well.
