The Langtauferer Tal is one of the most beautiful valleys of the Ötztal Alps. You will find it on the Italian side of the mountain range. The best tourist starting point in the valley is Melag (1,898m) located at the end of the mountain road at an altitude of almost two thousand meters above sea level. A short, comfortable walk from here leads to the Melageralm mountain hut (1,973m), which can be a trip destination for a family with small children, or a „starting point“ for the rest of the hike.

Melago

The hike starts in the small romantic mountain village of Melago, where there are only a few farm buildings and a small chapel. There is a really large parking lot in front of the village, which is ready for lots of tourists heading to this beautiful Italian part of the Ötztal Alps. It is about 10 km from the main road (the turnoff is in the picturesque town of Curon Venosta, located by the famous Reschensee lake).

View of the valley

Just beyond the village is a crossroads with several options for further continuation. Our choice is the easiest – we will go through the meadows and gradually descend to the river

Tourist route to the Melageralm cottage

The road to the Melageralm cottage is really comfortable and picturesque at the same time. The mountain on the horizon is the Nockspitze (3,006m) and there is a hiking trail on it.

Rio Melago

Just beyond the village is a pretty stream, the Rio Melago, descending so precipitously that it is almost like a waterfall. The path also leads up to the Passo di Melago (2,968m) along it.

The road is pleasant, almost always on the level

A view of three thousand

However, the view ahead of the frozen three thousand is more interesting. Such as Äußerer Bärenbartkogel (3,473m) or Cima Fontana (3,366m)

View from the bridge

The path will lead us to a bridge from where there is a beautiful view of the river and the mountains in the distance. The destination of this walk – Melageralm – can be seen on the horizon. Paths to the cottage continue on both sides of the river. There is one more bridge before Melageralm.

View on the opposite side

On the opposite side, we can already see a few buildings in the distance in Melag, the start of this walk.

Picturesque wandering along the river

Now we have a pleasant kilometer of walking along the river with pleasant views of the surrounding slopes and meadows.

Melageralm

From the second bridge, the first climb awaits us, but it is not dramatic by Alpine standards. After about 45 minutes of leisurely walking, we are at the Melageralm, where you can have refreshments.
