If you still have enough energy after the ascent to the pass Kongmaru la, we recommend leaving here the backpack and continue without it even higher along the eastern ridge of Kongmaru. During this „walk“ you can get to know the surroundings of the high mountains Kang Yatse and admire the end of valley Markha, which is not directly visible from the pass. The way is not difficult, but if it weren´t for the prayer flags, you might think that there have been nobody walking here before.

Pass Kongmaru la (5 276 m asl)

After only a few tens of altitude meters there is already nice look back to the trodden path through the pass Kongmaru la. You can make trip from it not only in this, but also to the opposite direction, where walkable terrain ends earlier.

The flattest six thousand high mountain

Deep down below you is plain Nimaling, where you will descent in a while from the pass Kongmaru la when you return from this walk. Refreshing tea tents shine like only small white dots. At the very right is the highest mountain in Zanskar – Kang Yatse. To cross the top before Kang Yatse (6 200 m asl) you already need crampons and for the main peak also climbing skills. An interesting possibility, about which is not written much, is a gigantic neighboring flat hill that is easily accessible directly from Nimaling – its flat summit ends in a breathtaking height of 5,900 meters asl and its location next to a giant mountain of Kang Yatse guarantees great views. The pointy peak itself is already over six thousand meters above sea level.

End of Markha valley

In the moment will open the end of Markha valley and you will see the moraine of glacier, in which is hidden a nice pond – spring of Markha River. It is another possible trip from Nimaling.

On the flat ridge in the left is the pass Lalung la, from which you can descend in the canyon for about 12 km to the main road Leh-Manali between villages Miru and Lato, so it can be very alternative start or end of the trek.

Kongmaru Peak

Very logical destination of this trip should be outlook top of Kongmaru Peak, but you have to count with that in advance not to set off from the pass without backback + there must be good weather.

You may prefer admiring the views from the top before Kongmaru Peak (5 413 m asl).

Strength of nature

You will definitely be fascinated by awesome strength of nature – it is difficult to believe how such beautiful plant can survive in so inhospitable landscape like this.

The way back to the pass is very fast. The path is really not difficult.
