The vast majority of tourists continue from the Salt hotel to the island Incahuasi. But it is a good idea to extend salar tour by a day and ascend the volcano Tunupa. The starting point for this trip is a small village Coqueza on the northern edge of salar located right under the volcano.

Tunupa in the distance

It is more than 70 km drive along the salt plain from the salt hotel to the northern edge of salar. But the volcano with its typical crown of weathered rocks is seen virtually from everywhere.

Oprava džípu

A typical photo from salar tour – a stop for taking pictures associated with a car repair. It is happens only seldom here that you do not have to change at least a wheel. The reason for it is difficult terrain together with mostly old car fleet.

Tunupa and Coqueza

Colorful peak of Tunupa rises directly from the edge of salar. Coqueza was until recently only a poor village with a few fields. Today tourism brings in some money even though only small percentage expeditions come here.

Flamingo in Coqueza

Flamingos flourish well in the mud at the edge of salar. There are not many other possibilities to see tehm in other parts of salar.

Fields in Coqueza

Vegetation also thrives well in Coqueza even though almost constant breeze carries salt all around.

Sunset in Coqueza

Coqueza is one of the few places in salar, which is ideally situated to a beautiful sunset.

Salar after sunset

Colorful sunset in salar is really amazing. Then is the surrounding area veiled into the darkness, it becomes cold and it is best to go to bed because you need to wake up early in the morning the next day for the ascent to the volcano Tunupa.
