Postalm as the largest plateau in Austria is a popular tourist destination in the Salzkammergut. There are several marked circuits around this picturesque landscape. From the Postalm Rundweg 3 circuit, you can easily ascend to two nearby peaks, which have wonderful yet different views of the surroundings. The whole ascent to Windkogel (1,566 m above sea level) and Thorhöhe (1,533 m above sea level) is very simple and even families with children can handle it safely.

View of the Wieslerhorn

The beginning of this ascent is from the „yellow“ circuit Postalm Rundweg 3 at the cottage Wiesleralm (1,360 m above sea level) standing at the crossroads. From here you can see other picturesque homesteads Schafbergblickhütte and Erlbachhütte. In the background you can see the most popular hill Wieslerhorn (1,603 m). However, we will continue in the direction of Thoralm for a while before we turn in the direction of the hill

Looking back at the Wiesleralm

The road rises only slowly from the beginning. After about 500 meters you will reach a signpost, where you will disconnect from the main circuit and the path will follow the path „Thorhöhe“. Picturesque views back to where you were a few minutes ago

View of the Braunedlkogel

On the horizon, on the south side of the meadow, you can see a more challenging destination – Braunedlkogel (1,894 m above sea level)

Horses on Postalm

Postalm is not only mountain meadows, views, mountain huts and cows, but also lots of free-grazing horses. From the signpost the road climbs steeper, but to the saddle between Windkogel and Thorhöhe it is still not even 150 meters high

View of Schafberg from the pass

Less than half an hour's climb from the Wiesleralm, you stand in a small flat saddle between Windkogel and Thorhöhe. The main yellow road descends from there to Strobel at Wolfgangsee. 16km and almost a thousand meters below, so a good cat. From here, only an unmarked footpath leads to our Windkogel

View of Thorhöhe

The area around the saddle is a bit damp and trampled by cattle, but the trail to Windkogel is quite clear. Looking back, the „pass“ is nicely visible and the side hill Thorhöhe, our second destination today

View of the Sparber

On the final ascent to Windkogel you can enjoy the view of the beautiful limestone peak Sparber (1,502 m above sea level), another of the possible destinations in the area

View from Windkogel

It is only about 10 minutes from the saddle to the top of Windkogel. From the top there is a really beautiful view up to Lake Wolfgangsee. It's actually the edge of this plateau, so to the north the terrain falls a few hundred meters below

View of Windkogel

From Windkogel we return to the saddle and now we start to climb Thorhöhe along the marked route. Looking back, it is beautiful to see that the trails on Postalm are not technically demanding at all, but they have beautiful views.

Thorhöhe crossing

Thorhöhe is actually such a long flat ridge. During its transition, beautiful views of Wolfgang see open up. A herd of cows settled on the first as the top, where the column of leadership is. From the right top with a cross, where there is also a bench, there is again an amazing view of the depths to the north

Panoramic view of Postalm

Thorhöhe is also a popular peak, because it offers a wonderful panoramic view of the entire plateau. Basically, the whole basic circuit number 3 can be seen

Descent from Thorhöhe

The descent itself is worth it, because you have a slightly different view in front of you. The tip on the left is Rinnkogel (1,823 m above sea level)

Descent to Thoralm

After a while in front of you you can see Thoralm, which is already on the basic circuit No. 3. From here you can finish or return to the Wiesleralm cottage, where this ascent began
