Beautiful lakes at the Bernina Pass
The Bernina mountain pass (2,328m) belongs to the high Alpine passes. The interesting thing is that there is a practically non-winding road leading from Sankt Moritz to it. The Bernina Pass is also famous for its beautiful views of mountain giants such as Piz Cambrena (3,606m). However, the main attraction here is the amazing lake Lago Bianco. You can see a lot of interesting places here during a short walk.
Hotel Bernina Hospice
The center of this excursion site is the Hotel Bernina Hospiz , located right next to the most beautiful viewpoints and about 450 meters from the Bernina Pass itself. An interesting alternative for those who want to have a high starting point for hiking and accommodation in one.
View of the Bernina Express and Lej Nair
The tracks of the famous Bernina Express connecting Chur and Tirana run through the pass (or lower than the road). The smaller Lej Nair lake can also be seen next to it.
The ubiquitous Swiss cows
The surroundings of the pass are literally ideal for the life of Swiss cows. There are a lot of them here and they like to take pictures.
Lago Bianco (2,234m)
Lago Bianco is a beautiful dam. Its water is no longer white as its name would suggest, but emerald. The construction of the dam was for the purpose of supplying water to the hydroelectric power plant. An interesting hike is to go around the entire lake, which is about 7 kilometers with an elevation gain of only 82 meters.
Panorama of the lake from the dam
There is a nice view of the lake and the mountains from places where you can see the small dam.
View of three dominant mountains
Three beautiful mountains rise directly above the lake (from left):
– Punta Carale (3,429m)
– Piz Cambrena (3,606m)
– Piz Arlas (3,375m)
The Vedretta di Cambrena glacier between them has already melted a lot – a hundred years ago it must have been much nicer here.
