A tour of the Petrified Forest is one of the nice stops on a trip along the northwestern tip of the island of Lesbos. In addition, it is a very unique place, because there is only one similar one in the world. However, you must not let your imagination work much in advance, because of course you will not find a real petrified forest here. There are mainly the remains of ancient redwood stumps and parts of trees the size of larger stones. There are only a few larger tribes. However, this does not change the fact that the crystallized parts of the wood look really beautiful.

Petrified Forest Valley

The Petrified Forest site is located on a sunny slope high above the valley leading from the Ypsilou Monastery to Tsihliodas Bay. So it is really worth coming here early (if you have a rented car) – on the one hand, you will avoid bus tours and the sun will not burn yet. If you only go through the basic circuit, then count on a half-way, but if you go on all the trails, it's a really long tour.

Preserved trunk

Almost immediately at the beginning is a preserved large trunk of an ancient tree

The individual exhibits are about 20 meters apart, so there is still something to look at. But really don't expect the gigantic remains of the whole forest here – the most preserved parts of the trees are mostly stumps

Colored wood

Wood has basically become quartz, but thanks to various additives, these fossils are colored in red, orange and yellow shades.

Gemstone?

Some of the tribes really look like some gems.

Museum of Minerals

The exhibition of parts of Kemns looks almost like the exposition of some mineral museum. It might seem that the petrified forest is only here, but much of it ended up under the sea and other sites are in the vicinity of the town of Sigri.
