Walk to the cliffs and ruins
Skala Eresou is known mainly for the fact that the poetess Sapfó was supposed to move here. Apart from swimming on a nice long beach, however, you can also take an interesting walk to the east, where there are beautiful cliffs and a very nice view from the ruins of the fortress.
Skala Eresou beach
You can start the walk either directly from the city or from the beach as part of a „rest“ from swimming and sunbathing. To the west you can see at the end of the beach more than 130 meters high cliff on which sits a chapel / another opportunity for a walk /. However, we will continue in exactly the opposite direction.
East view
Our path leads east to the cliffs behind the city harbor. The way back then leads through the ruins lying on a hill directly above the town. There are a number of taverns in the town, directly above the beach. This part of the beach is therefore busier, completely without privacy and is also narrower.
The town of Skala Eresou
The town of Skala Eresou itself is picturesque – you will find nice houses, romantic streets, a church. However, it can be seen that it is one of the most touristy on the island, with souvenir shops, so it does not have such an „original“ atmosphere as forgotten villages in the mountains.
The port of Skala Eresou
After you leave the town, the hustle and bustle is completely silent and it becomes a practically „abandoned“ walk. The port at Skala Eresou is small, but it has a beautiful view not only of the cliffs, but also of the small ruins on the hill, the main goal of this walk.
Church near Skala Eresou
However, the most beautiful view from the harbor is on the other side to the small church and further to the cliffs. There is another possible beautiful view – there is a mobile transmitter, to which a dusty road leads.
Climbing the cliff
Directly from the port, a footpath leads north along the stone walls to the settlement of Christos, less than a kilometer away (the dirt road leads from there to the aerial). It is possible to turn off right from the edge and rather intuitively climb a small lookout cliff. Looking back you can see everything – Skala eresou, the harbor, the church and the ruins of the fortress.
View from the cliff
The reward for the short climb is a beautiful view down from the cliff to the local wild cliffs and a deserted small beach

The view on the other side of the cliff is no longer so dramatic, but another deserted beach is also nice.
Road to the castle
From the cliff you can go almost directly to the castle. In addition, a paved footpath leads from the walls.
The ruins of the castle in Skala Eresou
The ascent to the castle is relatively strenuous in the Greek heat, but in reality it is only about 50 meters high. The main remnant is only a small spherical tower.
A beautiful view
The reward for the climb is a beautiful view of the cliffs and the harbor
View of Skala Eresou
The hill itself is quite long and overgrown, so the next road is a moment without a view before a nice view of Skala Eresou opens up.
View of Eresos
The path continues for a while along a little noticeable path through a pine forest before you reach the last beautiful view of the oasis below you surrounded by arid mountains. In the distance you can see the town of Eresos. Just below you is a house from which a comfortable path leads directly to the city. Anyway, to hit this path from the town is significantly more difficult than going to the castle from the harbor.
