A tour of the cradle of the industrial revolution
The city, known mainly for its football clubs ** Manchester United ** and ** Manchester City **, is the center of fashion, culture and alternative ways of life. Manchester is also sought after for its varied nightlife. Historically, Manchester is one of the most important cities of the Industrial Revolution and is characterized by a unique combination of modern architecture and Victorian architecture.
Manchester United
A visit to the stadium of one of the most famous football clubs in the world is the basis for every football fan, but few people will miss it when visiting Manchester. Some people will only need to look at the stadium from the outside, others will pay a tour of the entire stadium. The history of the club is really varied, United has many victories and awards to his credit, but also black days, such as the air tragedy in Munich.
Manchester City
Another, no less great, football club is Manchester City. Both clubs have long been at the top of the top English league ** Premier League ** and during their joint derby the city is literally flooded with fans.
Trafford Center
Football is more of a male affair. On the contrary, the typical women are shopping and large shopping centers. Trafford Center will literally be a paradise for them. It is a luxuriously built center, where you will feel at times like on the Titanic and at times like on a castle. Overall, Manchester is a great place to shop thanks to the diverse range and reasonable prices. Lovers of original (often home-made) goods should not miss a visit to the Northern Quarter, especially the ** Affleck Palace **
The Printworks
Another very famous center is ** The Printworks **, you will find a multiplex cinema and lots of bars, cafes and clubs. Inside this complex you will feel like in a completely different city.
Albert Square
Albert Square City Hall is without a doubt one of Manchester's most beautiful historic buildings – both interiors and exteriors. Albert Square hosts annual Christmas markets and New Year's fireworks.
Cathedral
Another beautiful historic building is the gothic cathedral ** Manchester Cathedral **.
John Rylands Library
Do you like Harry Potter? Then you must not miss a visit to the neo-Gothic library ** John Rylands Library **. It has some of the most beautiful interiors in all of Manchester, reminiscent in many ways of the Harry Potter School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Hogwarts. Admission to this building is free, you only need to watch the opening hours, which are limited. Right at the entrance, a beautifully decorated letterpress catches your eye, and then the library leads visitors up the stairs. Here you will find ancient originals by Shakespeare, Chaucer, Dickinson and other important personalities, but the real gem is the part of the Greek text on papyrus, which is probably the oldest preserved fragment of the New Testament. Another beautiful library is the ** Manchester Central Library **, whose circular building stands next to the town hall.
Museums
Manchester is full of museums and most of them are free. It is worth mentioning ** Museum of Science and Industry **, as Manchester is an important industrial city, ** Imperial War Museum ** with very original modern architecture, ** Manchester Museum **, ** People's History Museum **, ** Museum of Transport **, ** National Football Museum ** and many more.
Salford Quays
Salford Quays is a great place just a 15-minute tram ride from the city center. There used to be a port here, today it is a populated area with modern architecture.
The Lowry
The Lowry is one of the most interesting buildings in Salford Quays. It is a complex designed especially for theaters, operas and galleries.
Castlefield
Castlefield is a beautiful area around a Roman fortress from 79 – ** Mancunium ** (after which Manchester bears its name). The area is surrounded by canals and is a great place for walking. It is interesting in this area that both the world's first industrially used canal and the first railway for passenger transport ended here. The oldest train station on Liverpool Road is now part of the ** Museum of Science and Industry **.
Hula bar
In the northern part of the center is the district ** Nothern Quarter **, which lives as if by life. During the day you will find a lot of shops with very original goods (such as the already mentioned Affleck Palace), at night music clubs and bars open on every corner. If you love cocktails and exotic music, you should not miss the cult bar Hula.
Canal Street
Who doesn't visit ** Canal Street ** in ** Gay Village ** as if they weren't in Manchester. The street, where there is a gay club in virtually every house, is truly original and the friendly atmosphere here proves that Manchester does not look at the differences between people. Especially at night it is really busy and all the clubs and the whole street are full of people.
Platt Fields Park
Although Manchester is an industrial city, there is plenty of greenery, including many beautiful parks. It's raining almost constantly in Manchester, but if you're lucky and the blue sky shows up, be sure to visit one of the parks. The most beautiful are ** Platt Fields Park **, ** Heaton Park **, ** Alexandra Park ** or ** Didsbury Park **.
Walkden Gardens
Another beautiful area in Manchester is ** Sale **. The area is home to a wealthier population and features large brick villas in contrast to the green streets. ** Walkden Gardens ** in Sale are beautiful gardens that are definitely worth a visit.
Shambles Square
A very interesting place in the city center is ** Shambles Square **, where you can relax with a beer in the beautiful half-timbered pubs ** Sinclair's Oyster Bar ** or ** The Old Wellington Inn **.
Gravel Lane Viaduct
Bridges are an integral part of Manchester. Most of them are located where the Irwell River or canals flow (for example, the Castlefield area), as well as in the former port of Salford Quays, or around the railways. Typical bridges from the Industrial Revolution use solid metal ribs as part of the load-bearing structure.
Trinity Bridge
An example of a more modern bridge is the ** Trinity Bridge ** at the luxurious five-star hotel Lowry.
Parade in Manchester
Manchester is a culturally very rich city. Many different nationalities live here, including a relatively large Czech community, many of whom move here mainly for work. The city center is often filled with street performers and dozens of festivals and workshops are held here every year. One of the biggest is the June ** Manchester Day Parade **, which has been held every year since 2010. The festival is attended by over 100,000 people and features 20,000 artists.
Irwell River
The River Irwell, which flows through Manchester, is a remnant of the shallow seas that covered the area many millions of years ago. The area around the river is ideal for walking.
Hilton
The tallest building in Manchester is the Hilton. It is possible to take the elevator to about two thirds, where there is a bar with a great glass view. From here, you have the whole of Manchester in the palm of your hand.
