The park was founded in 1973 and has been managed by the non-profit organization African Parks since August 2015. Thanks to this organization, the entire park was fenced and so there is a good chance that poachers will not get inside. As there are not many native animals left in Malawi, most of the animals in the park are purchased from neighboring countries.
