The largest Swedish island

Gotland is an island with a rich and relatively unique history. It did not emerge from the Baltic Sea until a few thousand years ago, when a land glacier retreated from northern Europe and the sea thawed again. The island has been rising tirelessly since then, although its highest point is only 83 m. Hundreds of megalithic funerary ships testify to the settlement more than 4,000 years ago. In the Middle Ages, Hansa, a major trading company dominating the Baltic, was established here. Dozens of churches have hardly changed since the 14th century.
