Fortress overlooking the bay
The entrance fee is €2 and you will enjoy the place almost alone without the crowds of tourists.
The history of the place goes back much further than the fortress itself. In ancient times, the important city of Aptera stood above the Gulf of Souda, which was one of the important centers of western Crete and benefited from its strategic location between the sea and the interior. The Koules fortress itself was built during the Ottoman period, primarily as a military point for controlling the surrounding landscape, access routes and the Gulf of Souda. Its massive stone walls today remind us of a later chapter in Cretan history, when the island was under Ottoman rule and similar fortresses were intended to help maintain control over the restless region.
