Crete is the largest Greek island and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea. It is home to four Greek regional units – Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno and Lasithi. According to ancient Greek myths, Crete is considered the birthplace of Zeus – the ruler of the Olympian gods. The capital, Heraklion, is full of history, which you can find everywhere on the island. So instead of the bustling and hectic Heraklion, I recommend choosing one of the cities for your holiday, Chania or Rethymno. Here you will find more peace and cleanliness, but the authentic Greek atmosphere will not be diminished.
You can get here by plane from Prague in less than 3 hours. There are direct flights to Heraklion and Chania.
