The Giant Mountains

Picturesque Giant Mountains (in Czech called Krkonose) are the highest mountains in the Czech Republic and throughout the Sudeten system. They are characteristic by bare rounded ridges with stone slopes under the peaks and deep valleys. The highest mountain Snezka (1 603 m asl) is compared to other peaks sharper and clearly dominates the entire mountain range. There are also several nice waterfalls, beautiful upland meadows with peat bogs. River Elbe (in Czech called Labe) springs here – it is one of the longest rivers in Europe. Králický Sněžník is an independent mountain range near the Jeseníky Mountains, to which it is often assigned. The highest peak of the same name is Králický Sněžník, 1424m high. The peak is formed by a typical Nordic tundra environment, where only grasses, blueberries, cranberries, heather and other low plants grow. Sixty kilometers long Ještědsko-Kozákovský ridge works mainly as a perfect outlook of a lot of other beautiful areas of the northern part of the Czech Republic (the highest mountains in the state – Giant Mountains, Jizera and Lusatian mountains, or fairy Czech Paradise). In addition, a marked hiking trail leads across the whole ridge except for a small part by Hodkovice nad Mohelkou. Only a few people undertake complete two or three days (with side trips) crossing of the ridge and it is a real shame. continue reading
