Tibet is generally accessible to tourists only three ways:
- By air to Lhasa: the most common entry for travel agencies
- By train from Golmud: the way along the impressive transtibet rail in the highest location in the world. Business travelers undertaking a long trip around Asia usually enter this way.
- By car from Nepal: across the border Zhangmu (Friendship Highway). The most common way of arranged tours /treks in Kathmandu
- Travel in hinterland of Tibet is famous for crossing the highest road passes in the world

You can only get to Lhasa by direct flight from the Chinese cities of Beijing (4 hours), Chengdu (2 hours), Chongqing (2 hours), Shangri-la Deqen (1.5 hours), Kunming (2.5 hours), or Kathmandu, Nepal ( 1.5 hours).
