Bosnian “classic“
South of the Bosnian town of Bihač lies the Una National Park. It is located on the Bosnian – Croatian border around the river Una and its main attractions are incredibly beautiful and romantic waterfalls. The largest waterfall is called Štrbački Buk. In the southern part of the national park, in the village of Martin Brod, you will find another smaller waterfall called Milančev Buk.
Input control
At the entrance to the national park, we were subjected to a vicious inspection. However, the dog licked in vain, because there is no danger of any biscuits or other treats underfoot for the driver or passenger. It would be different if he looked a row further where the children were sitting.
Honey on the road
Behind the booth with the guard of the national park, we came across a warning sign, what, or with whom we should count on the way through the forest. We have never met a bear with our own eyes. I don't know if, unfortunately or thank God, but rather the first one, because we drove and it still gives a pretty big sense of security.
Vepar on the road
When you ride with small children, any similar sign will arouse great interest and loud laughter. The pig and honey on the handcuff sounded the whole time, until we met some other interesting thing.
And thirdly, all good or bad
Eventually, a wolf joined the bear and the wild boar, ending the warning of wildlife in NP Una. Maybe they should have added something about mosquitoes, which, unlike the boar, wolf or bear, we met and knew first-hand.
And here we are!
We finally reached the waterfalls. If you don't have the time or courage for a similar adventure, it doesn't matter. You can take a picture at this sign and if you manage to close yourself, it will be a very authentic photo. ;-)
Cascades and waterfalls on Una
The roar of the water will surround you, as well as you will feel the refreshing coolness, which you will especially appreciate in the hot summer. The wind will blow cool water splinters and refresh your face. You will realize what water can make noise and how the hum will change as you move away or approach the waterfalls or turn your head in another direction. Everything gets a different dimension and the atmosphere of the place will engulf you.
Around the waterfalls
There is a wooden walkway with observation terraces around the waterfalls. You can walk the entire route with cascades comfortably and safely. The sun conjures a beautiful rainbow into the splinters of water.
Water will find its way everywhere
Water wherever you look. It hums, foams, bubbles, sings, splashes.
Autocamp Rafting Center Discover Bihać
If you are looking for a place to camp, I recommend this small and pleasant camp on the banks of the Una. It is located in front of the village of Kulen Vakuf.
The ruins of the island Ostrovica
When you cross from the Štrbački Buk waterfall to Martin Brod, try to go out or to the ruins of the Ostrovica castle above the village of Kulen Vakuf. The view from the top is worth it, you have the beautiful and unfettered Una in front of you.
Martin Brod
A little further upstream we get to the village of Martin Brod. According to legend, it got its name from the girl Marta, who fell in love with a boy from the other bank of the river Una. However, their parents did not want their love, so Marta secretly ran away after the boy. She had to cross the river to the other bank, where her chosen one lived, but her foot slipped on a slippery rock and she fell into the river and drowned. So much is said, and we will look at another waterfall called Milanchev Buk. The waterfall is smaller and you pay a small entrance fee to enter it.
Cascades below Milanchev Buk
Calcareous sediments under the waterfalls form various pools.
