The historic center of Marmaris on the northern end of the Bay of Marmara is washed by the sea from two sides – on one side there is cruise ship harbor and on the other one harbor for yachts. Previously, the town was protected by small castle, which is best visible directly from the sea as it is not standing on the highest point. There are old twisting streets around the castle and nearby is quite big mosque and bazaar. There are also dozens of restaurants all around, especially those specializing in seafood. The best atmosphere is here, of course, in the evening. The old center is accessible from the hotel area along pedestrian promenade or by dolmus running along the parallel main shopping street.

Alleys in the old town

The entire old town is situated on a small hill, so it is full of stairs, small white houses and shady nooks.

Castle in Marmaris

You can see only a small part of the castle from the old town. Clearly visible in all its beauty is from the sea. The castle can serve as a beautiful outlook point. But it may be difficult to get inside as it is now under reconstruction (as of 10/2013).

View of the town

The best view of the town is not from the castle, which is not the highest point and in addition, it is closed (as of 2013), but from the restaurant at the very top of the hill – see the introductory slide of the photoreport.

There is incredible number of restaurants and cafes/tearooms in the old town that are full mainly in the evening and there is usually a hookah prepared on the table.

Bazaar in the old town

A bazaar is adjacent to the old town. But it does not have the atmosphere you might expect. You can buy here for example this typical turkish tidbits.
