To the crypt of the Liechtenstein family
Vranov u Brna is a well-known and frequently visited Marian pilgrimage site, located about 12 km north of Brno in places formerly called „Moravian Switzerland“. Its history dates back to the 13th century. The spiritual administration of the pilgrimage site and parish is provided by the „Paulians“ – the convent of the Little Brothers of St. Francis of Paula. The Pauline Monastery is located next to the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
Cemetery
We will start the tour with a walk around the old cemetery, which stretches around the former original church of St. Barbory. There were only a few gradually growing monuments. At the back of the wall is a sign highlighting the uncovered remains of the foundations of the church.
Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary
From the cemetery is a good view of the church and the monastery. It is said that in the 13th century, a village was established around churches as a thank you for healing the eyes of a certain official. In the years 1617–1633, Maximilian of Liechtenstein had the early Baroque Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary built according to the plans of the Jesuit J.Mari and the Brno builder JKErna on the site of the former wooden church. Next to the church there was a monastery of the monastic order of the Little Brothers of St. Francis of Paula, the so-called Paulines, which was abolished during the Josephine reforms. Today, the monastery is restored, in 2002 there were 12 monks and it was the only Pauline monastery north of the Alps.
Interior
In the church there are, for example, frescoes by JJEtgens and Vranov's manger made of linden wood (1946–1950 by Fr.Bartoš) with a mechanical drive and a jukebox. Under the nave is a crypt of the Liechtenstein family, in 1820 supplemented by an Empire tomb.
In front of the church
At the side of the church, in front of the entrance to the monastery, there is a modern sculpture of St. Francis of Paula (1416–1507), hermit and founder of the Pauline Order. Opposite the corner, above the gate to the tomb, there is another modern statue – Jesus Christ, respectively. Sacred Heart of the Lord.
