Or the capital of the island of Menorca
Mahon (or Maó) has been the capital of the island since the beginning of the 18th century. At the same time, it is one of the largest natural harbors in the world, which is the reason why Menorca has been conquered many times. The city was built by the British, who intermittently controlled the island until 1802, when Menorca finally fell to the Spanish. It is an impressive port city that is very lively. At the same time, it is a historical city, so everyone will find something for themselves here.
Atmosphere
Mahón has a very specific atmosphere. Unlike Cuitadella, which is very historical, here history is present but not dominant. The city seems very airy and pleasant. The streets are lively but not crowded.
Church of Santa María de Maó
One of the landmarks of the city is the Church of Santa María. From the outside, it is an architecturally relatively inconspicuous building.
Interior
The church is famous mainly for its unique organ. At the entrance to the church, you can buy a ticket for one of the local organ concerts or other musical events.
Historical buildings
There is a beautiful historic building right next to the church. It was disappointing when we found out that it was a municipal office.
View of the city
Mahon surrounds the harbor bay. The town itself is located on a rock, which adds to its overall atmosphere.
Placa del Carmen
While wandering through Mahon, don't miss the small Placa del Carme. Another of the local beautiful churches is located here.
Marketplace
The interior of the marketplace can also be visited on the aforementioned square. Currently, however, there are more independent shops.
Nooks and crannies
Mahon hides many interesting corners, hidden squares, alleys and restaurants.
View of the harbor
Mahon also offers a number of vantage points with beautiful views of the harbour. Not only cruise ships, but also cargo ships, ferries and private luxury yachts are moored here.
Museum
Another interesting place is the Inglesia de San Francisco. Next to the church itself is the Museum of Menorca, which can be visited.
Views
Another beautiful view of the harbor stretches from the aforementioned church.
How to the city
If you park near the port, it's nice to get into the city using the elevator. One really appreciates it in the hot climate here. Parking is more complicated in Mahon. There is an underground parking lot in the center for a fee. The largest parking lot can be found right next to the port. However, it took us a good twenty minutes to find out if we had to pay a parking fee here. The best option is to go to Mahon by bus, as basically all connections go here.
What to watch out for
Mahon is a beautiful town that lives at its own pace. The siesta is strictly observed here. At two o'clock all the shops close and open again around five. However, restaurants are usually open at this time as well.
Night city
I recommend visiting Mahon in the evening as well. The city is beautifully lit and very lively.
Alleys
The local streets have an even more interesting atmosphere at night. The city is also very romantic.
In conclusion
In general, I would summarize that you must not miss Mahon during your trip to Menorca. Day or night, the city maintains a unique spirit.
