Overpopulated center of Nepal
Overpopulated Kathmandu is for most tourists gateway to Nepal, and almost every one of them has to overcome the initial shock from smog, disorder, dense traffic and crowds. But you will gradually get used to that and you will be looking forward to the atmosphere in Thamel, especially after a challenging trek. In addition, in Kathmandu, or rather in Kathmandu valley, are the most historic sites across the country.
Day 1
Introduction to Kathmandu
You will probably get by taxi into the tourist district of Thamel after the arrival at Kathmandu airport. After you accommodate, go out to explore the streets and the historic center ofDurbar square. Along the way, catch your breath at beautiful stupa Kathesimbu.
Life in Thamel
Hustle in the city center
Kathmandu district of Thamel will most likely be your first place of visit in Nepal and you will spend here probably a couple of nights. If you fall in love with Nepal and Himalayan treks, you will be intimately familiar with it after a few visits. A jumble of trekking shops with fake brands, souvenir shops on every corner, travel agencies and incredible number of small hotels and restaurants make a special tourist atmosphere to this place. In addition, crowds of locals interfered with the motorbikers and a few Hindu and Buddhist shrines. Within walking distance is the Durbar Square with the royal palace and pagoda temples. It is worth to go through the surrounding adjacent neighborhood and observe local life. continue reading
Visit of Kathesimbu stupa
Small Boudhanat
While walking around Thamel it is definitely recommended to stop at a small square literally filled with Stupa Kathesimbu. It looks like a small copy of famous Nepalese stupa Boudhanat. But compared with Boudhanat, no admission is paid here and tourists come here mostly only by coincidence. There is also a Buddhist temple, so you can undertake a short tour here. continue reading

The historic center of Kathmandu
If Thamel is the tourist center of the town, then its southern edge with Durbar Square is the historical and religious center. The center of Kathmandu is one of the three royal towns in the Kathmandu Valley. It is most often visited thanks to its accessibility, but it is probably not the most beautiful. Go to see the main Kathmandu sights the second day – stupas Boudanath and Swayambhunath and Hindu temple Pashupatinah. If you are more, so it is ideal to bargain a taxi to Swayambhunath, from where you can get back on foot.
Visit of Pashupatinath
The holiest temple in Nepal
Pashupatinath is the most important Hindu temple throughout Nepal. It is located at the eastern end of Kathmandu, just a short distance from the international airport. The entire site is situated on both banks of the sacred river Bagmati on the edge of a small forest. To the temple itself, however, can go only Hindus, so that the majority of foreign tourists can only see the exteriors. On the banks of the river are still burned the dead and you will sure meet here several holy men – Sadhu. continue reading

The holiest Buddhist temple in Kathmandu
Almost at the eastern end of Kathmandu just two kilometers north of the international airport lies the most sacred stupa in Boudhanath. It belongs among the largest in the world and Buddhist temple is adjacent to it. From everlasting it has been a favorite prayer place of Tibetan traders. continue reading
Visit of Swayambhunath
Monkey temple in Kathmandu
Stupa Swayambhunath (called also Monkey temple, which is very apt) with surrounding temples stretched on the hill ranks among the most important landmarks in Kathmandu valley. As it is only about two kilometers from Thamel, it is accessible from the center also by foot. At the top of the hill are many small temples and souvenir hawkers. There is also an interesting view of the entire town. If you want to do even more interesting walk, walk around the entire hill, by that make prayer kora and spin with thousands of mills. continue reading

Almost every tourist visiting Nepal wants to ascend to the stupa Swayambhunath in Kathmandu. But only a few of them, however, improve his/her karma by making here a sacred kora, i.e. bypass the whole hill along the wall with thousands of prayer wheels.
