If the major sights in Esfahan are Immam mosque and square Naqsh-e Jahan, then Square Sabzeh and adjacent mosque Jameh are its less ostentatious variation. Even so, they are also worth a visit, together with the nearby big bazaar.

Square Sabzeh

Sabzeh Square is located at the intersection of four busy boulevards. Fortunately, all of them disappear shortly before the square below ground, so there is absolute peace on the square itself. With its dimensions of 250×70 meters it belongs among very large squares. There are a plenty of fountains and the whole square is surrounded by a bazaar.

Ali minaret

Just behind the southern end of the square towers giant Ali minaret, looking from afar like a little smokestack. Absolutely on the horizon are visible jagged peaks of massif Sofeh.

Outlook of Jameh mosque

A few tens of meters to the north from the square lies Jameh mosque, the most important monument around the square Sabzeh.

Jameh mosque

Jameh Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Iran. For this reason, it belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage sites. However, it is not so monumental as Immam mosque.

Jameh mosque from behind

Like elsewhere in Iran, behind the mosque is a very quiet area without nearly a living soul. Yellow bricks on the back of the mosque countradict the front inlaid with blue tiles.

The path to Grand bazaar

From the square Sabzeh you can also set out to the Grand bazaar – Bazaar Bozorg. The entry into the endless corridors is just a short way behind Ali mosque.
