Flight to Everest
Trip under Everest is a desirable destination of visitors to Nepal. One of the ways to get here relatively easily is erratic flight to the small airport in Lukla, which is often placed in the ranking of the most dangerous airports in the world. But compared to classic alternative of long bus ride to Jiri and several days lasting trek in the foothills of the Himalayas it is significantly faster option, however, if your flights are not cancelled several times due to bad weather. Anyway, during the flight you will see from above the green ridges of central and eastern Nepal and enjoy an adrenaline landing directly against the rock wall.
Kathmandu Valley
In the beginning you will fly for a few minutes over the crowded Kathmandu valley with views of thousands of houses scattered among rice fields and towers of brick stills. As the end of the basin framed by mountain ranges approaches, the views of the villages perched on the slopes with terraced fields get more interesting.
Himalayan foothills of Mahabharat
Views from the window (unfortunately – if not scratched, then at least greasy) on the ground below you can explain you, why is the ground transportation in Nepal so difficult – the state is not only almost entirely mountainous, but the mountain ridges extend from north to south and the country from west to east. In addition, there are monsoons with regular landslides every year. But the view is beautiful.
Above the valleys
Beautiful green landscape is crossed every now and then by the flow of Himalayan rivers.
Landing in Lukla
Finally landing – hills are suddenly dangerously close. When you fly over the pass, you can already see the runway on the opposite mountain. You will certainly enjoy a lot of adrenaline in these parts of the flight. Lukla gives the impression to be higher than the plane and in addition, the runway is very short and ends with the mountain.
Lukla (2 850 m asl)
If you survive the flight, you will then pass through a tiny airport, behind which you will be offered a lot of accommodation / porter / guide services. If the weather is nice and you did not come with a long delay, it is reasonable to set out for a trip for a few hours close to Namche Bazar. If not, nothing happens, accommodate, have a dinner and wait for the next day. Or at least walk around the surroundings of the town.
Old corners in Lukla
Lukla and the surroundings of the main street are full of new lodges. But in the back corners you can still find nice old wooden buildings. Otherwise, of course, the town is full of shops with souvenirs and trekking equipment.
Nad Luklou
If you fancy an evening „acclimatization“ walk, it is not bad to go over Lukla along the stream, which supplies it with water up to the chortens.
Foggy prospect
In the afternoon and in the early evening, mostly low clouds and fog „wander“ around Lukla, but you can still see the nice mountain Nupla (5,885 m above sea level).
