The bus ride from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas is a long day's business. After all, 620 road kilometers await you, and especially a ferry across the famous Strait of Magellan. At the same time, you will see two faces of the Land of Fire – rugged mountains and a vast inhospitable pampas

Driving inland Fireland

The beginning of the journey from Ushuaia is really interesting going through the mountains through the valley of the river Olivia and then Lasifahaj. The mountains look bigger than they really are (measuring about 1200 meters above sea level) and it snows above them most of the time. The road climbs to a beautiful pass, about 500m above sea level overlooking Lake Escondido (mirador lago Escondido). The road is slowly leaving the mountains and the weather is getting better. The path continues through an unimaginable flat pampas and we see llamas and ostriches around.

Argentina - Chilean border

The road is empty, no one is anywhere, but you can still wait an hour and a half on the Argentine side, at least it's time to stretch and experience the famous Patagonian wind. Backpacks are also x-rayed on the Chilean side, but it's still only half an hour

Driving to the strait

The road is gravel and the stones from the bus leave quite well. It is interesting to watch llamas gracefully jump over giant sheep pens. Both the Land of Fire and Patagonia are lands of two faces – the mountainous wild west and the endless plains to the east.

Punta Espora

We're finally at Magellanic Strait. There is a large queue, because it is said that nothing has passed through the stormy sea today. the background here is quite picturesque

Boarding place

Definitely do not expect any pier here, the panel leads directly to the sea and the boarding itself is quite an experience

Beach by the strait

Since there is time, it is possible to walk a piece of the local coast with endless pebble beaches

Ferry across the Strait of Magellan

Finally, a ferry appears on the horizon, finally triggering some activity. All buses are honking their lives and everyone is in a hurry. It would definitely not be good to forget to stay here. Immigrants must underlay the bus with wood so that it does not break in half. On all ferries you have to get out of cars or buses, here, on the contrary, everyone has to stay inside. An interesting feeling when it swings really nicely and the bus is sprinkled with water. It would not be good to dive here.

Arrival in Punta Arenas

It is still almost 170 kilometers from the strait to Punta Arenas. And we arrive there 12 hours after leaving Ushuaia
