A village in the middle of the Czech Republic where a miracle happened
The picturesque village of Číhošť is located 7 km northeast of Ledče nad Sázavou. It is one of the oldest villages in the Vysočina region, the first mention of it dates back to 1347. In the cadastre of this small village is the geometric center of the Czech Republic and in the local church there was a so-called Číhošť miracle.
Geometric center of the Czech Republic
On the northeastern edge of the village is a nicely landscaped place, where the center of the Czech Republic is marked. A memorial stone was erected here on December 12, 2006. This geometric center of the Czech Republic was determined by surveyors, who divided the polygonal territory of the Czech Republic into 2834 triangles and calculated the weighted diameter of their centers of gravity. In the adjacent gazebo there are a number of explanations, including appropriate labels.
Local firefighters
There are very active members of the volunteer fire brigade in the village. In addition to their usual activities, they also maintain a firefighting tradition, and on festive occasions they can be seen in period suits and with an ancient firefighting syringe.
Fire museum
In the middle of the village square is a small fire museum, part of its collections is, among other things, the original horse-drawn syringe from 1898 and a motor sprayer from 1938 and, of course, a number of period equipment.
Pub in the village square
In the place of honor of the village there is a typical pub aptly named „Zeměstřed“ and a nicely renovated Gothic church next to it.
The church where the Číhošť miracle took place
In December 1949, the so-called „Číhošť Miracle“ took place in this Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, during which a wooden cross was repeatedly tilted while preaching to the pastor Josef Toufar. Spreading news of the miracle caught the attention of the StB, and P. Toufar was arrested and taken to Valdice Prison. He died in February 1950 as a result of torture in pre-trial detention.
