Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital, located in the quiet Bohnice district of Prague, hides much more than just treatment pavilions. The complex is interwoven with picturesque parks, historic buildings and green corners, offering patients and visitors a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the big city and a space for relaxation and recovery.
The history of the area dates back to 1876, when the Provincial Hospital for the Insane was founded here. During that time, the area has changed and grown, but it still retains many valuable historical monuments.

Parks and greenery

The Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital complex boasts extensive parks and green areas that serve patients and the public for relaxation and walks. Here you will find mature trees, flower beds, ornamental shrubs and quiet corners that invite you to sit and relax. The park also has a pond with a fountain and a children's playground.
The entire area is open to the public. You can visit the park and historical monuments for free. Entry to the treatment pavilions is only permitted with the accompaniment of staff and by prior arrangement.

Large area

The entire complex is spread over a vast 44-hectare plot of land. The fact that there is a Prague public transport bus line with several stops here is also proof of its vastness.
The newly planted trees have grown to a respectable size during the hospital's more than century-long history. Among them, you will find common species such as lindens, chestnuts, maples and spruces, but also a number of rare exotic trees. The garden is a frequent destination for dendrological walks.

Headquarters building

Just behind the main entrance is the beautiful one-story headquarters building with a mansard roof and paintings on the facade. It was built in 1909 in the neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau style. The mosaic on the gable depicts a woman showing a patient the way to the institution.

St. Wenceslas Church

St. Wenceslas Church, a majestic Art Nouveau building located on the grounds of the Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital, offers a fascinating story of beauty, hardship and hope. Built in 1907 according to a design by architect Václav Roštlapil, the author of Straka Academy, the church initially served as a spiritual refuge for patients and staff of the hospital.

Church interior

The interesting, light-filled interior of the church is decorated with stained glass windows by Josef Schmitt.
Today, the church serves both for religious and social and cultural events.

Steeple

The church building is dominated by a dome-topped tower designed by architect Václav Roštlapil. The tower is 55 meters high and, thanks to its location on a hill above Prague, it is actually the highest point in Prague. During the war, it was even used for aircraft navigation.

Sociotherapeutic farm

In the northwestern part of the complex there is a therapeutic farm, where patients engage in animal husbandry and gardening. The freely accessible farm is mainly used for group and occupational therapy for hospital clients. They take care of horses. You will also see a pony, donkey, goats or llamas here.

Hippotherapy

The farm's main activity is hippotherapy, which uses horses to treat patients with various psychological and physical problems. Hippotherapy has been shown to have a positive effect on the psyche, reducing anxiety and depression, and promoting self-confidence and motor skills.
