Lisbon City Center

The center of Lisbon is considered to be Praça Dom Pedro IV, popularly known simply as Rossio. The main local monument is the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II and the statue of Dom Pedro IV. Right next to it are other attractions such as the amazing Santa Justa elevator, Rossio railway station (an amazing neo-Gothic building). Rossio is essentially connected to another interesting square – Praça dos Restauradores (Discoverers' Square). Here, the most important monument is Palácio Foz

Santa Justa Elevator
We will start our walk through both squares in the center of Lisbon at the amazing technical monument – the Santa Justa Elevator. It is 45 meters high and connects the lower town (Baixa) with the Upper Town (Bairro Alto). Built in the neo-Gothic style like many other monuments in its vicinity.

Statue of Dom Pedro IV.
We arrive in the very center of Lisbon, which is Rossio Square. There is the typical black and white paving (so-called calçada portuguesa), creating an optical illusion of waves. Of course, there is also a statue of Dom Pedro IV, who was also the first Brazilian emperor.
Fountain opposite the theater
Another dominant feature of the square is a nice fountain. There are actually two beautiful fountains, each at a different end of the square. In the background, you can see probably the most important building on the square – Teatro Nacional D. Maria II.

Rossio Station
Moving on – on the short line between the two squares is the beautiful building of the Rossio railway station. From here, trains depart for the world-famous Sintra.

Renewal Square
The name commemorates the restoration of Portuguese independence from Spain in 1640 after 60 years of Spanish rule. There are a number of monuments around the square, but two are central – the obelisk and the Eden Palace, an art deco building and one of the city's iconic structures

Evening view of the castle
There is also a very nice view of St. George's Castle from the square.
