  • Reptiles: you can see lots of big iguanas basking on the rocks of Mayan ruins.
  • Whale shark: northeast of Isla Mujeres
  • Turtles: four species of turtles lay eggs on the island of Isla Contoy, where it is established a national park. A visit here is only to permit. Maximum 200 visitors per day

Yucatán is a good destination for nature lovers. There live lots of species of birds, turtles, reptiles, sharks, monkeys.

Birdwatching

  • The best birdwatching in the Yucatan is in reservation Sian Ka'an. In addition, they live here as well as monkeys and crocodiles.
  • In the lagoon adjacent to the island of Holbox, which is so far little affected by tourism, are seen pelicans and flamingos.
  • Laguna Celestun at Merida is the most famous place for watching flamingos on the Yucatan. (The most you will see flamingos in the winter).
  • Rio Lagartos (inhabited by over 250 species of birds)

Merida Zoo: The largest zoo in the Yucatan is in Merida. There are more than 1000 animals.
