The Gailtal Alps are bounded on the north by the river Drau and on the south by the river Gail. The highest and most famous part of the mountain range is the Lienz Dolomites with the highest mountain Grosse Sandspitze (2,770 m above sea level). The whole mountain range belongs to the southern limestone Alps. The main starting point for the mountains is the district town of Lienz
