The largest Icelandic glacier
Vatnajokull is a glacier located in the southeast of Iceland. It is the largest glacier of the country and the second largest in Europe (just after Austfonn glacier in Spitsbergen). With an area of 8100 km², it covers roughly 8–10% of the island's surface. From its edges, about 20 glacier splashes are triggered. The name Vatnajökull is composed of the name Vötn – lake and jökull – glacier (Icelandic).
