One of the most important monuments of Mongolia
The Buddhist Erdene Zuu Monastery (probably the oldest in Mongolia) was founded at the end of the 16th century by the Khan Abatai at the site of the former Chinghish settlement town of Karakorum (Kharkhorin). Inside the square (400 × 400 m) square, surrounded by a massive wall, today there are several functioning temples.
