The provincial town of Chivay (3,640 m above sea level), located within sight of the Mismi volcano (5,625 m above sea level), is the true gateway to the world-famous Colca canyon. Fewer adventurers will set out from here to the sources of the world's largest river, the Amazon. The town itself is famous for its colorful market, pretty church, Inca bridge over the Colca gorge and thermal springs. The easiest way to get here is by bus from Arequipa.
