Return to civilization
Trek to the source of the Amazon V: the fourth day of the trek is also the last day. A long march along the Altiplan still awaits you at altitudes around 4,500 m above sea level. The biggest attraction is Lake Huarhuarco with lots of flamingos.
At llama fences
The beginning of the journey leads from Parihuana along the irrigation canal. After about 3.5 km of walking is a picturesque place where the river turns at a right angle. There are ponds and pens with llamas.
A journey through a desolate Altiplan
Afterwards, you will disconnect from the river and follow the dusty road for miles, practically in a straight line. After four days of strenuous wandering at these heights, you may pray that a truck with llamas drives you and moves you a little into civilization.
False hope
After an hour of marching, a truck begins to appear on the horizon, giving a false hope that he might take you somewhere, but it's just a wreck resting on logs.
Wandering on the endless Altiplan
Miles will not run away from you this day, even if you go at a fast pace. The scenery doesn't change much – the surrounding hills seem to be in the same place all the time.
Views of Mismi and Huarhuarco
From the ruins of the llama pens is probably the most beautiful view of Lake Huarhuarco and the distant peak of the Mismi volcano, which you climbed two days ago.
Altiplano Cemetery
After a while along the way you will meet a lonely cemetery. However, there is no human seat within a few kilometers, so its existence is a bit of a mystery.
Sheep and llamas
Even though practically the whole trek leads through a desolate landscape, you will meet hundreds of llamas and sheep on it – only a few people.
View of the Santiago river valley
After more than five hours, you will finally reach the view of the Santiago River Valley, which leads the road to the mining town of Caylloma. This valley is full of mines of various sizes.
By truck to Caylloma
After running into the valley, it is fortunate that a truck is coming to take you on the body. If not, the last seven kilometers to Caylloma are still waiting for you on a dusty road.
Caylloma
The trek ends in Cayllom, a sleepy mining town, where there are also some buffets, internet, but mainly from there there are at least two buses a day to Arequipa.
