As on other continents, the greatest danger in South America is in large cities. Wandering in slums and deserted streets in the evening with a large SLR on your neck is definitely not a good idea. Definitely do not take the local council lightly. When someone tells you not to go there, that there are bandits or shows a gesture of cutting your neck, they are most likely not kidding. Common thefts on night buses, for example, are also common. It definitely doesn't pay to experiment with drugs (cacti, cocaine).
