Týřov is one of the oldest castles in the Czech Republic. It is located in the heart of the Křivoklát region, on a promontory above Berounka, on the edge of the nature reserve of the same name. To this day, relatively large ruins have been preserved.

Skryj Bridge

The most suitable starting point for a walk to Týřov are Skryje. A small village of world importance thanks to a rich site of trilobites. The trip can be combined with a visit to the local museum dedicated to Joachim Barrand and the trilobites (outside the summer holidays it is necessary to book in advance). The circular educational trail In the Footsteps of the Trilobite begins at the museum, one half of which runs parallel to the red tourist sign and the other half runs parallel to the blue tourist sign. First we need to get to the bridge over the Berounka, so we can choose whether to go first on the blue and back on the red or vice versa. It is not necessary to go all the way to the bridge, but a short detour pays off, its construction is not very common on similar road bridges and is quite photogenic.

Berounka

And it also has a nice view of Berounka and the slope on the right side, where the next road leads. Týřov is still hidden behind the bend of the river.

After yellow

From the bridge we follow the yellow road along the river. Behind the last hidey building, the comfortable path becomes a narrow footpath cut into the slope. In some places it is almost at the level of Berounka, in others it is high above it. Use caution if it is wet or icy.

Týřovické rocks

We will soon reach the Úpořský stream, where the road turns to the right. Not far from this place are several cottages, from which there is a nice view of the beautiful but inaccessible Týřovické rocks.

Úpořský stream

The path continues upstream of the Úpořský brook (sometimes also called Oupořský). We cross the footbridge to the other side and only a short climb to the ruins awaits us. Some might be tempted to continue upstream, which flows a little further through a deep gorge between steep and rocky slopes, but the whole area is a national nature reserve, where entry is prohibited off the beaten track. And in the whole NPR Týřov there is only one marked road, and that is exactly the one we are just passing from Skryjí to Týřov. So nowhere else is an ordinary visitor legally allowed (although unfortunately someone can say something else …). There are a number of endangered plants and animals in the area, and the ban on entry certainly has a justification in this case.

Under the ruins

Just a few meters behind the footbridge, we are already standing under the ruins of the once important Týřov castle. The castle was founded around 1230 by Wenceslas I, several owners took over it and since the end of the 16th century it has been mentioned as desolate. Its remains stand out best when the trees are without leaves.

Remains of the palace

Remains of the perimeter walls of the castle palace have been preserved in the western part.

Castle tower

At the time of its greatest glory, the castle reportedly had nine towers. After most of them, there are no visible traces left, but probably the most powerful still defies time.

View from Týřov

From Týřov there is also a nice view of Berounka, Týřovice and the surrounding hills, which exceed Týřov by almost 200 meters.

Where now?

Since the marked path ends at the ruins, we must return the same way to Skryjí. If you want to extend the trip, try to go from Skryjí to the opposite side along the blue to Skryjské lakes on Zbirožský stream, which penetrates in these places through a rocky canyon. Or you can try to discover a somewhat secretive view of Týřov located on the edge of the NPR.
