Chemnitz is the third largest city in Saxony. In the era of communism, her name was Karl Marx Stadt. Here you will find not only historical monuments, but also interesting modern architecture and socialist artifacts. It has now come to the fore mainly due to the anti-migration protests that are now taking place in Chemnitz almost every day.

Chemnitz town hall

Ideal to start the city tour in the underground garage on Bretgasse. From here it is only a few tens of meters to the city center in front of the monumental town hall.

From the town hall, you can walk through the Rosenhof shopping street, or bypass it and get to the back of the town church

Neumarkt

Chemnitz is a city where, in addition to historic buildings, you will also find modern shopping malls in the center, such as the Kaufhof right on Neumarkt Square

Red Tower

After exploring the center, we set off on a circuit to other attractions of the city. The first is the Roter Turm tower – the oldest preserved building in the city. Now another huge shopping center Galerie Roter Turm is built next to it

Stadthalle Chemnitz

Next to the Red Tower is the Stadthalle Chemnitz cultural center. There is a small park and a pond for refreshing children on refreshing days

Karl Marx Monument

The icon of the city is the gigantic head of Karl Marx in front of a magnificent block of flats with the inscription in several languages „Proletarians of all countries unite!“. Today, you can find similar places only in the post-Soviet republics

Dorint Kongresshotel Chemnitz

Not only from the head of Karl Marx you can see the tallest building of Chemnitz – the Dorint Kongresshotel built in the style of brutalism. It is almost a hundred meters high.

Church of st. Petri

Right next to the opera house is a church with a very tall tower (82 meters) – Petrikirche

Chemnitz river

From the church we head towards the rest of the city. We have to cross the Chemnitz River beforehand, which basically divides the city into two roughly equal parts.

Schloßberg

Don't expect a huge castle at the top of the hill. There is a nice church whose tower can be seen from afar. The castle itself looks more like a gigantic farm building. Now it has a museum.
