Impressive castle, spa, parks ZOO
Bojnice is a spa town in central Slovakia about 1 km west of Prievidza. The first written mention of the town dates back to 1113. The biggest landmark is certainly Bojnice Castle, but the local spa, the famous zoo and a pleasant city center with a spa atmosphere are also worth a visit.
Bojnice Castle
The extensive chateau with three courtyards is built in a romantic style on the foundations of an originally Gothic and Renaissance castle from the 11th century. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Pálffy family completely rebuilt it into its current romantic form. It is built on a travertine rock above the town and can be seen from afar. The castle was declared a National Cultural Monument in 1970. The castle is open to the public and worth a visit.
The most romantic building in Slovakia
Bojnice Castle currently has a romantic character, which can be seen on the facade of the residential tower, which is very rugged. Also the openings in the walls, portals, walls, attics and various wrought iron details are typical of romantic architecture. Thanks to his impressive appearance, he has been featured in a number of films and series (such as the film Madly Sad Princess). A cave was discovered under the castle, which is accessible.
Castle park and ZOO
The adjacent chateau park also includes the adjacent chateau park, in which many different specimens of trees grow. According to legend, King Matthias himself liked to go to Bojnice and sit under a (now about seventy-year-old) linden tree opposite the entrance to the castle, which they called King Matthias's linden tree. This linden is probably the oldest tree in Slovakia. Part of the castle park is also a zoo, which contains rare specimens of exotic animals. The park continues through the forest park in Strážovské vrchy.
City
In the city center is Hurban Square, a long promenade with an alley of trees, benches and statues. The square is lined along its entire length with restaurants and cafes. In addition to local specialties, it is also possible to occasionally watch music and dance performances in the open air. The Bojnice Zoo, which is the oldest and most visited zoo in Slovakia, is also interesting. On the hill above the town there is a pleasant park with a rope center and a lookout tower „'Seagull in the clouds“. Bojnice is also a famous spa. The spa area is located about half a kilometer southwest of the square.
