City of iron roofs
On the main road connecting Baku in Azerbaijan with Tbilisi in Georgia, you can stop, for example, in the city of Samaxi (Shamakhi) located in the foothills of the Caucasus. You will not find many monuments here, most of them were destroyed by earthquakes. Iron roofs are interesting here. You can also take a short trip to the hill above the city.
Hotel in Samaxi
Samaxi is about 110 km west of Baku. Due to the fact that this city has over 30,000 inhabitants, you will find only one hotel from the Soviet era. At first glance, it looks like a finished block of flats, and it is practically like that. Only one staircase out of two can be used, because the other is covered with waste.
Friday Mosque in Samaxi
The only historical monument in the city is the Friday Mosque, which survived all earthquakes.
Oil extraction
It would not be Azerbaijan not to extract oil here.
The streets of the city of Samaxi
The streets of the city are dusty and rocky.
Magnificent iron roofs
Although it looks pretty poor overall, no one can be ashamed of not having a lavish entrance with a monumental iron roof.
Ascent to the hill
A good choice for the afternoon is to climb a hill overlooking the city.
City View
The city lies on a plateau, about 700m above sea level and is not so significant from the top.
Inhabited Samaxi
Not only a hotel, but a number of other buildings here have had their best years long ago.
Romance on the hill
The hill itself is relatively flat and sleeping in a tent here would be more romantic than in an vacated hotel in the city.
North of Samaxi
The landscape north of the city is picturesque and inhabited only by shepherds
Meeting with herdsmen
The life of a herdsman flows perfectly well here as well.
