To the very end of Georgia
Practically right on the border of Georgia with Azerbaijan you will find an interesting religious place – the monastery of David Gareja, located directly in the mountain ridge. Even the journey to this place through a desolate landscape is worth it.
County around David Gareja
The David Gareja Monastery is only a few tens of kilometers from Tbilisi, but you cannot reach it by public transport. From Tbilisi you have to take the train to the town of Sagaredjo / Sagarejo / (along the main road No. 5, about 50 kilometers). From here you can only negotiate a taxi driver who will take you the rest of the way (about 45 kilometers) through a desolate grassy landscape
Dusty road to the monastery
The asphalt soon ends and most of the way is on gravel
David Gareja Monastery
Finally we are in place and we can enjoy this beautiful monastery, dating from the sixth century
Watchtowers
The monastery also has smaller fortifications with watchtowers
Rock dwellings
You will also find dozens of rock dwellings built directly on the mountain
Monastery from the hill
You will find a number of interesting views of this mystical place
Ascent to the ridge above the monastery
It is definitely worth going from the monastery for a short hike to the mountain ridge. The path is quite obvious.
Rotunda on the ridge
There is a small rotunda on the ridge
Views of the region
The ridge is only some 840 meters above sea level, but the landscape towards Azerbaijan is falling a few hundred meters lower, so the view is quite worth it.
Azerbaijan part of the place
There are other caves dug in the rock under the ridge, but unfortunately there is a ban on entry, because it is already located in Azerbaijan.
Gigantic water collector
There is another big attraction near the monastery. A huge rock wall, where the monks carved a number of large grooves, which in the rain collect drinking water from all over this rock.
